Investing in education is essential to a country’s sustainability

How does education impact the long term sustainable of generations?
Sustainability is about knowing how to constantly evolve yourself, and those around you for future organisational requirements.

It’s about having the knowledge and understanding of social elements, such as the importance of social justice and its impact on employee wellbeing.

‘Education for sustainable development is a life-wide and life-long learning endeavour which challenges individuals, institutions and societies to view tomorrow as a day that belongs to all of us, or it will not belong to anyone.’ (UNESCO, 2004:9)

The knowledge we need in order to create sustainability is all about innovation, progression and flexibility. It’s about making the right decisions on all fronts to improve the world for ourselves and the generations to follow us.

How do we work towards a sustainable future?

Self and community investments today, ensure that profitable organisations are built. Legacy companies are moulded from the “blood, sweat and tears” of the previous workforce.

By dedicating time and energy into acquiring knowledge, understanding and skills, individuals are able to provide the building blocks for sustainable businesses.

Education is the key to building a brighter future for us and our children.

How to adequately prepare you for your career

The day you spread your wings and start your career will come quicker than you think. So the question is, how do you prepare to ensure that you are ready on that day?

Through your years of studying you might have set long-term goals of where you want to be in 10 years, but how are you going to get there?

Here are some simple steps to help you prepare

Step 1: Keep current

Constantly be aware of the trends and developments in your future industry. Learn the history behind it, understand the major developments happening now and projected changes in the future.

Being informed helps you stand out from other individuals in the same profession and will ensure that you are prepared for future interviews.

Subscribe to industry journals, newsletters, read industry- related blog articles and follow experts/specialists on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Step 2: Build a network

Network building is the best way to learn about any profession. Make an effort to build new networks by attending seminars, focus groups and discussion forums.

The digital age has also brought with it online network opportunities in order to gain a more global perspective. Your lectures/professors and fellow classmates will always be your base point when it comes to building your network.

These established networks can lead to future career opportunities.

Step 3: Constantly build up your portfolio

Your CV and portfolio are key deciding factors that can set you apart from your peers.

Your portfolio should reflect your insights on your chosen profession; your qualifications that would outline your credibility in the industry and your experience (practical exposure to the industry dynamics through vacation work or internships).

A good letter of recommendation from your references (such as teachers or lecturers) will assist with pushing your portfolio to the top of the pile. Teachers and lectures have the insight and connections to help open doors for you to more industry opportunities.

Three main trends changing the face of education in 2015

2014 was a crucial year in the ever-changing course of education in South Africa. It saw further technological advancements which enabled more learners’ access to schooling systems.

It also saw changes in the curriculum and the introduction of the ‘ACTION PLAN TO 2014: TOWARDS THE REALISATION OF SCHOOLING 2025’, a plan released by the country’s  Education Departments to achieve 27 set goals and improve education in South Africa by 2025.

To view the complete ‘ACTION PLAN TO 2014’, visit: education.gov.za

So what is in store for education in the year on 2015?

Here are the main educational trends to look forward to:

1: Skill based learning

In the last few years the evolution of learning has led to more than traditional methods, hence gamification making such an impact on digital forms of learning.

Numerous learning institutions are now focusing on a hands-on approach. This involves more than just knowledge; it incorporates experience and skills development.

Traditional learning will not be replaced by skill based learning in 2015, but rather the convergence of the two in order to assist learners in developing the relevant knowledge and skills-set to be effective in their chosen professions.

2: Learning to go mobile

The developments in digital learning have completely evolved the educational system. Learners are now not restricted to learning in classrooms but can access digital learning systems from various mobile devices such as tablets, laptops and mobile phones.

Video tutorials and lecture videos are available to be viewed 24/7 and although e-learning is not new to 2015, advancements in learning programs, connectivity and mobile devices are quickly allowing more individuals access to education.

3: Learning at your own pace

Traditional schooling is categorised by structured curriculums. Learners of a specific age are allocated a certain grade with a set time frame to complete the set curriculum.

While this is generalised to accommodate most students, it does not always work for everyone. Individuals work at a different pace and therefore adjust to subject requirements easier than others.

e-learning, some teachers and institutions offer students the opportunity to work at their own pace and complete a set curriculum before a required date.
